During the colder months, the weather determines how much time can be spent on the land but when it is milder, it is an ideal time to dig over the vegetable plot and prepare for planting.  In the meantime, source seeds for planting and buy organic “Nature’s Own” growing media.

March is the time to start seed germination.  Our growing media is ideal as contains all the main nutrients and trace elements that the seedlings require once the first true leaves have appeared, ensuring healthy plant growth. Plus as our Nature’s Own growing media is a natural product, it releases its nutrients slowly.  This steady supply stimulates sustained, healthy growth and plants are better able to withstand damage from pests and diseases throughout the growing season.

Soil fertility is key to producing a strong and healthy crop.  Organic crops rely on the soil for their nutrients so it is important to ensure all the nutrients are present in the ground before planting.  Our growing media is based on Moorland Gold which is biologically active and rich in naturally occurring minerals and trace elements that plants need.  Raking in Moorland Gold into land that is nutrient deficient or been heavily cropped in the past will help return the correct nutrient balance to the soil without the need for additional fertilisers.

January Sow carrots, radishes, peas, broad beans, spinach and parsley under light cover, onions under straw and tomatoes under glass.

February Sow broad beans, onions, peas, lettuce, cabbage, parsnips, radishes and spring onions in mild, less exposed areas.

March Time for seed germination using our Nature’s Own growing media.  Plant maincrop potatoes, asparagus, onion sets and garlic.  It is also the time to plant perennial herbs.

Start saving egg boxes as they make good chitting trays, and store the tubers in a light, cool, frost-free spot and leave them to sprout.  Make sure you put the tubers with the 'eye' end (where the sprouts will grow from) upwards.  Moorland Gold at pH 5.0-6.0 is ideal propagation media for potatoes when ready to plant out.

As our growing media is a natural peat product, it will require watering in a different pattern to conventional multi-purpose compost.  In warm environments it may dry out quicker but in cooler environments it may hold water better.  Ensure when using Natures Own growing media for the first time, watering is carefully monitored for the first few weeks to ensure the correct watering pattern is selected.

To improve the fertility of solid and claggy soil it is imperative that organic matter is incorporated into the soil.  This can be added in the form of Moorland Gold which is rich in naturally occurring minerals and trace elements.
